The book is, on one level, a continuation of Rosen's study, "The Classical Style" with application to the Beethoven sonatas. The book is marked by its wide-ranging references.

There is a great deal of specific discussion of Beethoven's piano sonatas, of course, but the book is enriched immeasurably by examples from and discussions Mozart, Haydn Cited by: The fingering of this book can't compare with Hinson's Alfred Edition.

There are three volumes from the latter. The music sheets are with a plastic comb so it is easy to lay flat when you read them. The fingering and explaination of Haydn's sonatas, such as dynamics and trill are clare and in detail/5(3).

Overall this book can serve it's purpose concerning the cheaper price, but for a little bit more (especially if you are learning the sonatas for the first time), I would highly recommend buying the Schirmer or more so Sonatas book ABRSM editions (if not Urtext) to be assured that the notation and what you are learning Sonatas book closer to Beethoven's original /5(78).
